QR Code Colors: What Works and What Doesn't
ClearQR lets you pick any two colors for a code, but not every combination scans equally well. Here's what actually matters, and what's just decoration.

A QR scanner works by telling dark modules apart from light background. Contrast, not color choice itself, is what determines whether a QR code actually scans, which means some good-looking color combinations are quietly bad choices.
Contrast is the rule that actually matters
Any two colors can work, as long as there's enough brightness difference between them for a camera to reliably tell the modules apart from the background in ordinary lighting. ClearQR's built-in contrast warning checks this automatically using a luminance-based ratio, similar to the WCAG accessibility standard, and flags anything too close to fail before you download. A dark foreground on a light background (or the reverse) with strong contrast will almost always outperform two similar mid-tones, regardless of which specific colors they are.
Inverted (light-on-dark) codes are riskier
A light code on a dark background is technically valid and scans fine on most modern phones, but it's a less common pattern than dark-on-light, and a small number of older scanning apps assume the standard orientation and struggle with it. If you go this route for a stylistic reason, test it on a few different devices before committing to a print run.
Avoid gradients and photo backgrounds
Stylized QR codes with gradients, embedded photos, or multi-color patterns behind the modules can look striking, but contrast varies across a gradient, which means part of the code may read fine while another part doesn't. These are fine for purely decorative use where scanning isn't the point, but risky for anything that actually needs to work reliably.
Using brand colors safely
Brand colors are usually fine to use as long as the contrast ratio holds up, which is exactly what ClearQR's contrast warning checks for you in real time as you adjust colors. Can I use my brand's exact colors?
Usually, yes, as long as there's enough contrast between the foreground and background. If your brand palette is naturally low-contrast (e.g. two pastel tones), consider using your accent color for the modules against white or black rather than two brand colors against each other.
Does a transparent background affect scanning?
Not on-screen, since the actual rendering (in an app, on a webpage, in a PDF) shows through whatever is behind it. For print, a transparent background needs to sit on something with enough contrast against your foreground color once printed, so check the final printed contrast, not just the file.
Why did my colorful QR code fail to scan when it looked fine on screen?
The most likely cause is contrast: colors that look distinct on a bright, color-calibrated screen can compress to similar brightness values under poor lighting or after printing. Re-check with ClearQR's contrast warning and consider testing a printed proof under the actual lighting it'll be used in.
